Metaphysics will always exist in the world, then;and what is more, exist with every one, but more especially withreflecting men, who in default of a public standard will eachfashion it in his own way. Now, what has hitherto been termedmetaphysics can satisfy no acute mind; btit to renounce it entirelyis impossible: hence a critique of the pure reason itself must beat last attempted, and when obtained must be investigated andsubjected to a imiversal test; because otherwise there are nomeans of relieving this pressing requirement, which means some-thing more than mere thirst for knowledge.
