Satanta

This photograph must have been made early in the spring of 1867 at Fort Dodge. The chief is wearing a jacket made partly of an army officer's uniform, with the insignia of a captain. In may of that year, General Hancock gave him a major general's coat. He appears to be waring a Washington medal but there is no record that he was ever presented with one. Note that his hair is cut off just below the ear on the right side; this was a Kiowa custom.
