  1. ^ He was vice president under ویلیام مک‌کینلی and became president upon McKinley's assassination on September 14, 1901. This was prior to the adoption of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment in 1967, and a vacancy in the office of vice president was not filled until the next election and inauguration.
